Behind the Scenes: Building the Practice
This page serves as a living archive of the creative and technical process behind building the practice library. It contains foundational notes on mindfulness language, web structure, and the integration of cognitive and somatic grounding.
1. Naming the Space
Explorations in framing a digital space for mindfulness and self-compassion:
- Mindfulness & Presence: Abiding Mind, Abide in Awareness, Abiding Space.
- Self-Compassion: Abiding Heart, Abide in Peace, Abiding Grace.
- Practical Daily Rest: The Abiding Way, Abide Daily, Abiding Stillness.
2. The Vocabulary of Noting
Short, single-syllable words are highly effective for acknowledging emotional states without getting tangled in the storyline.
- Anger (Hot): Mad, Rage, Burn, Snap, Flare.
- Aversion (Pushing away): No, Push, Block, Wall, Flee.
- Irritation (Prickly): Irk, Vex, Grit, Edge, Sour.
- Somatic (Physical): Grip, Tense, Tight, Brace, Knot.
3. The Integrated “Warm Note” Practice
A four-step micro-practice designed to move from unconscious reactivity to grounded presence.
- Note: The cognitive brake. A gentle, internal command to instantly halt the storyline.
- Stop: The physical brake. Freezing the body to reinforce the mental pause.
- Drop: The somatic anchor. Shifting awareness out of the head and down into the weight of the body.
- Warmth: The embrace. Placing a hand on the heart and acknowledging the emotion with the spacious phrase: “There is…”
4. Technical Foundations
Key standards for creating a frictionless, calming web experience for students.
- Use standard HTML5
<audio>tags or WordPress native shortcodes for clean audio playback. - Include a clear Download Practice (MP3) link so students can listen offline.
- Keep the main navigation menu simple: Home, Start Here, Audio Library, About, Contact.
- Always include a comprehensive Health & Wellness Disclaimer in the footer.
Wisdom Note: De-identifying from an emotion by shifting from “I am angry” to “There is anger” changes our relationship to the feeling from one of identity to one of observation. It creates the space needed for warmth.
